At Aitkenvale, we believe that homework is effective in supporting, consolidating and revising learning when it is clearly related to class work. Our homework is designed to engage students in learnings from the Australian Curriculum that has been taught during the week or term.
Our Homework program has two parts:
- Home reading – daily or nightly
- Homework – twenty activities to be completed over a Term. Two per week.
Home Reading
Reading is the single most important skill the child will learn at school. While many children have developed reading skills, further development depends on using these skills regularly. At Aitkenvale State School, we believe that students will benefit from reading every night.
Every child at Aitkenvale State School, will be offered a home reading log for them to record their reading in throughout the year. In upper years, students are encouraged to independently fill out their log with parents/carers sighting and signing, before returning each week.
Students will be encouraged to borrow two home readers from the school library each week, in their classes' allocated library borrowing time.
At Aitkenvale State School, we will be presenting Home Reading Certificates to acknowledge the progress of students in their home reading. The certificate, may be presented either in class or on parade.
In class certificates, will be for, 25 nights, 50 nights, 75 nights, 125 nights and 175 nights of reading. On parade certificates, will be for, 100 nights, 150 nights and 200 nights of reading.
Homework
To support the balance of family commitments; no specific time allocations are provided for homework activities, however, it is recommended that students engage in reading for 15 minutes per day, while spending no more than 40 minutes per week on homework tasks.
Your child will receive one homework sheet, each term, to complete. Each sheet has twenty activities to complete over the term. The activities relate to English, Maths, Spelling and Science or HASS. Your child will complete two activities each week.
Students requiring differentiated homework to meet their individual learning needs (either at a lower or higher level), need to request these from the classroom teacher, if not already supplied.
All homework completed by students, will be marked and returned to students within one week after the homework is submitted for marking.
At Aitkenvale, homework is encouraged but non-compulsory. Students will not be penalised for incomplete homework. Teachers may have incentive programs in place for students who complete and return homework.
Paper copies of homework sheets will be sent home or can be accessed on the school's website.
